If you're considering buying travel insurance for your next trip, know what questions to ask. There are some things the agent will not explicitly get into even though everything should be spelled out in your contract. It is best to come prepared with a list of questions.
Inquire about the steps required for filing a claim.
Ask the agent kind of proof is required to prove luggage damage or bodily injury. Find out how long it typically takes to get reimbursed for a filed claim.
Ask if there are deductibles associated with your policy and if there is a choice of different levels.
Make sure you have a toll-free number to reach the insurance company from any country. Ask if a representative is available 24/7 for problems or questions.
Find out if you have your own choice of treatment facilities or doctors if you become sick or injured, or whether you are limited to certain venues and doctors.
If your trip involves multiple destinations (particularly if they include more than one country), ask if your policy will cover all of them or if you'll need separate policies for each destination.
If your vacation is destination-specific, such as a ski trip or backpacking excursion, ask the agent if he has an insurance policy geared for adventure travel or whatever other type of trip you're on.
Inquire about extended coverage if you are not traveling alone. Your policy may include coverage for family members.
Ask about special discounts such as travel insurance for seniors or members of certain organizations, such as AAA.
